Family Photo Session at Corralejo Sand Dunes — Real Results

There’s something about the Corralejo Sand Dunes that makes everything easier. The soft sand invites children to move freely, the open space takes the pressure off adults, and the sunset light does the heavy lifting for everyone. If you’ve been wanting family photos you actually love — this is the place.

I’m Ramón, a photographer based in Corralejo, and I’ve spent years shooting family sessions across Fuerteventura. In this post I’ll walk you through how it works, what to expect, and how to prepare for a day that goes smoothly.

Why the Corralejo Dunes Are Perfect for Family Sessions

The dunes offer three things that very few locations can provide at the same time:

Plenty of space. No walls, no furniture, no objects to manage. Children can move, run and explore freely — and that actually helps. Often the most beautiful moments are the most spontaneous ones.

Clean, timeless backdrop. White sand creates a neutral background that doesn’t distract and doesn’t date. In ten years, those photos will look just as good as they do today.

Unbeatable sunset light. Between 7:30 and 9:00pm in summer, the light is low, warm and flattering — the kind that makes everyone look great, regardless of age or experience in front of a camera.

And the dunes have something harder to quantify: they’re magical. The sheer scale of the landscape puts everything else — nerves, heat, children who don’t want to pose — firmly into second place.

How to Organise Your Family Session

A family session with me lasts between 60 and 90 minutes — enough time to capture a good variety of moments without the children getting worn out.

Before the session: we have a quick chat over WhatsApp or phone so you can tell me about your children’s ages and personalities. That helps me know in advance how I’ll work with them on the day.

On the day: we meet at the agreed spot, walk together to the location, and start without any rush. There’s no rigid script — I suggest natural situations and games that work for each specific family.

With young children: bring a favourite snack for pause moments — it really helps. Let them take their shoes off in the sand (they love it). And don’t pressure them to look at the camera. The best photos are usually the ones where they’re not posing at all.

Delivery: you’ll receive between 40 and 80 edited photos in full resolution within 7 to 10 days, via a private online gallery.

Outfit Ideas for Family Photos

The question I get asked most. Short answer: coordinated colours, not identical outfits.

What works well:

  • Neutral and earthy tones: beige, off-white, sand, navy blue, sage green. All complement the dunes beautifully.
  • Coordination, not uniformity: everyone wearing something from the same colour palette creates visual cohesion without looking like a uniform.
  • Comfortable clothing: we’ll be walking through sand. Avoid heels, easily-lost flip flops, and anything that makes the children uncomfortable.

What doesn’t work:

  • Very bright or neon colours — they compete with the landscape
  • Large, loud patterns
  • Visible logos on clothing

Extra tip: if the children have a favourite outfit they feel really comfortable in, let them wear it. A happy child in their favourite clothes photographs better than an uncomfortable child in «perfect» clothes — every single time.

Family Session FAQ

What if my children don’t want to have their photo taken? Much more common than you’d think — and it’s not a problem at all. I work with what’s there: if a child doesn’t want to pose, I wait for the moment they’re distracted playing. Those tend to be the best photos of the lot.

What age range do you work with? Any age at all. I’ve photographed everything from babies of a few months old to grandparents. I adapt the session to the age and energy of each person.

Can we bring our dog? Absolutely. Dogs on the dunes make for beautiful photos. Just bear in mind there’ll be more movement and a bit of extra unpredictability — which usually adds to the charm.

Can we shoot somewhere other than the dunes? Of course. The dunes are my most common recommendation for families, but if you prefer the beach, the village, or another location in Corralejo, we can absolutely make that work.

How much does a family session cost? Get in touch directly and I’ll give you up-to-date pricing tailored to what you need.
