If there’s one moment of the day that transforms any photo into something special, it’s golden hour. In Fuerteventura that moment is particularly intense: warm light arriving at a low angle from the Atlantic, long shadows across the dunes, and a glow that changes the tone of skin, water and landscape in a matter of minutes.
I’ve been photographing on this island for years, and golden hour is by far the best time for a photo session. In this post I’ll tell you exactly when it is by season, the best locations, and how to prepare to make the most of it.
What Is Golden Hour?
Golden hour is the short period just after sunrise and just before sunset. The sun reaches the Earth’s surface at a very low angle, producing several unique photographic effects:
Warm, golden light — the sun filters more atmosphere and removes the cold blue tones of midday.
Long, soft shadows — create texture and depth without the harsh contrasts of noon.
No hard under-eye shadows — lateral light is flattering for portraits.
Brief window — typically 30 to 60 minutes. You need to be ready.
Golden Hour Times in Fuerteventura by Season
Fuerteventura sits at 28° north latitude — the same band as Cancún or Hawaii. The sun sets late in summer and earlier in winter, but never too early. Here are approximate sunset and golden hour times:
Best Locations in Fuerteventura for Golden Hour
Orientation matters as much as timing. For sunset golden hour you need west-facing beaches and locations. These are my favourites:
El Cotillo — the most spectacular
The west-facing lagoons at El Cotillo receive the sunset light directly on the water. The result is a turquoise mirror bathed in gold that’s simply impossible to replicate at any other hour. My absolute top recommendation for golden hour sessions.
Playa del Moro / Los Lagos (Corralejo) — the most accessible
Ten minutes from Corralejo, these beaches catch the lateral late-afternoon light. The blue water and white sand transform completely under warm golden tones.
Playa de Cofete — the most dramatic
The sun setting behind the Jandía Massif with the full Atlantic in front creates a cinematic landscape. It requires travel (45 min from Corralejo plus a dirt track) but the result absolutely justifies the logistics.
Corralejo Dunes — the best for portraits
The dunes catch golden light from every angle. The texture of the sand with raking low light is impossible at midday. Perfect for couples, portrait or family sessions.
Popcorn Beach — the most unique
Black volcanic stones lit by golden hour create an extraordinary visual contrast. The colour of the rocks changes completely under warm sunset light.
Sunrise vs Sunset Golden Hour
Sunset — the preferred choice for photo sessions. The light lasts longer, clients are more relaxed and there’s no early start required. In summer, sunset in Fuerteventura is at 9pm — ideal for families and couples.
Sunrise — equally beautiful light but with far fewer people on the beaches. Perfect if you want complete privacy. In summer the sun rises before 7am.
For boudoir or artistic portrait sessions, sunrise has the advantage of completely empty beaches. For families with young children, sunset is more practical.
